Each year, music students have the opportunity to audition for the Junior and Senior Central District festivals as well as the All State Festival. Students in grades 7 through 9 are eligible for Junior Central District, and students in grades 9 through 12 may audition for Senior Central District. Based on their scores, some of these students were also recommended to audition for the All-State Festival.

National Music Awards

National Choral Award

The National Choral Award is presented in recognition of singular merit, ability, and achievement of outstanding contribution to the success of the Shrewsbury High School vocal program.  These individuals have demonstrated an unusual degree of loyalty, cooperation, and high quality of conduct, by the general consent of the music faculty, school officials, and others.

The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award recognizes outstanding achievement by an instrumentalist in the field of jazz, as demonstrated through superior musicianship, character, and individual creativity.

Excellence in the Dramatic Arts Award

The Excellence in the Dramatic Arts Award recognizes outstanding contributions of talent and commitment toward the success of dramatic theatre at Shrewsbury High School.  These individuals have consistently exhibited a commendable degree of diligence and sensitivity while presenting performances of high quality.

Department Awards

Louis J. Vella Music Award

Each year, the Department presents an award in honor of Louis J. Vella, who was a music educator and the director of music at Shrewsbury High from 1955 to 1992.
The Louis J. Vella Award honors a student who exemplifies the spirit of Shrewsbury’s Performing Arts program. Louis Vella dedicated decades to building a strong, vibrant performing arts community, connecting school and local music, and fostering opportunities for students to grow as musicians and collaborators. This award recognizes a student who, through dedication, leadership, and contribution to the program, carries forward that same commitment to excellence and community.

Director’s Award

The Director’s Award was created to recognize an exemplary Performing Arts student and their contribution to the Shrewsbury High School Performing Arts Program. 

In order to receive this award, a student must meet the selection criteria, be nominated by a Performing Arts teacher, and be unanimously accepted by all department members. 

The student must meet at least 4 of the following criterion: 

  1. Be an active participant in a variety of performing arts activities at Shrewsbury High School.
  2. Demonstrate exceptional musical or theatrical ability through department-sponsored performances.
  3. Show sustained commitment to the Performing Arts program throughout their time at Shrewsbury High School.
  4. Maintain a professional attitude, strong preparation, and reliability during rehearsals and performances.
  5. Demonstrate leadership and a positive influence within the Performing Arts community.
  6. Represent the Performing Arts Department with integrity and be a member in good standing within the school community.
